What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy® is a skin rejuvenation treatment that utilizes ultrasound to bring about therapeutic results. It is commonly used to benefit individuals who are looking for a safe alternative to more invasive treatments, like facelift surgery. It is also preferred by many people over laser treatments. Ultherapy® offers these individuals a more comfortable option.

The skin starts to loosen as time goes by because the body does not produce the same amount of collagen as it once did. Collagen is contained in the lower skin layers. It is a protein that helps to hold tissue together while providing fullness in the skin. This helps to keep it tight and wrinkle-free. The wrinkles form when the collagen level drops and the skin loosens. It also loses its ability to retract back to its former position because the elastin levels drop. Elastin is the substance that provides elasticity to the skin. Therefore, the appearance of aging can be attributed, at least in part, to a reduction in collagen and elastin.

It is highly likely that you have been or will be exposed to ultrasound energy at some point in your life. It is commonly used for imaging purposes to help doctors make a proper diagnosis. It can be used for things like checking the pumping action of the heart. It is also used at appropriate intervals during pregnancy to allow doctors to monitor the development of the baby. It can also be used therapeutically for pain relief and to promote healing.

Ultherapy® is delivered when a wand is passed across the skin in much the same way it is when an ultrasound is done for imaging purposes. The energy warms the lower layers of the skin, which will begin to grow collagen as a result. This will return the level of the protein to a level that is closer to what it was before age caused a reduction of it. Consequently, the skin will tighten and the wrinkles will start to go away.

Since Ultherapy® utilizes the same ultrasound energy that provides images of soft tissue within the body, it provides the advantage of allowing those administering the treatment to see what is going on in the skin. As a result, a more precise delivery of the energy is possible, because the equipment can be adjusted to deliver the energy at the proper frequency and intensity.
