Microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is not the same as dermabrasion. Dermabrasion is an exfoliation process that uses a high-speed rotating brush to remove the upper layers of the skin. Dermabrasion is used to give the skin a smoother surface and to improve the look of facial skin that has been scarred by an accident or previous surgery, or to treat deep acne scars. It is also sometimes used to remove pre-cancerous growths on the skin. How Does Microdermabrasion Work? Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical method of skin rejuvenation that gently removes the outer layers of the skin using a high-speed stream of tiny crystals or a diamond-tipped hand piece. Microdermabrasion is used to treat fine lines on the face, discoloration in the skin, light scarring, sun damage, stretch marks, and acne. It can also be used to stimulate collagen formation, resulting in a refreshed, younger-looking complexion.

How Long Does Treatment Last? Does it Hurt? Microdermabrasion treatment for the entire face takes about 30 minutes and is not painful. There is no “down time,” following treatment so that it may be done before work or during your lunch break without anyone noticing. Results are usually seen after three to six treatments, and maintenance treatments are required. Different people, for different reasons, favor both dermabrasion and microdermabrasion though both can be effective in correcting minor skin issues. Some skin care specialists over-hype the expected benefits of Microdermabrasion, leading to patients feeling disappointed in the results. Microdermabrasion treatments are effective within reasonable limitations, which should be made clear to the patient prior to treatment. McGuiness Dermatology specializes in Microdermabrasion. Prior to treatment, your doctor will explain the expected results based on your individual case.
